The staff canteen had green chairs and low tables, and a large painting or print of the face of Jesus which I believe was the work of a former MA student. There were large rubber plants and a strangely bristled cylindrical brush which was often nestled amongst the leaves of one of them. There were photographs of graduating ceremonies from the last eight years or so on one yellow wall, and a framed series of drawings by Jim Dawson, who graduated in 1997, entitled 'Ideas' in which a man attempted to stop his ideas from escaping through his ears and mouth. Until its closure a few months before the closure of the whole canteen, food could be purchased at lunchtime from a hatch which was otherwise closed. Through this hatch you could see people queuing in the main canteen. Above the hatch was a plate covered in acrylic paint with a fork attached to it. There was a water dispenser with plastic cups, and a 'Coca-Cola' bin which was difficult to operate without touching the remains of food left on top of the flip-top lid. There was an office for the catering manager, and a telephone and computer which I had never seen being used. When it was open this was a place for staff to meet in the morning over coffee and possibly bacon sandwiches, and at lunchtime to catch up with others and discuss students in privacy. The windows overlooked the adjacent college, grass and car park, in the same way as those in the main canteen. The doors came out next to the kitchen doors. When leaving the staff room you would find yourself next to a small store room under the stairs which led up to the MA studios and the library.
